2009: Nest 30
July 26th, 2009

I got a call from FWC that a man from Sea Crest called that he had a large turtle nesting, this was about 9:15 a.m. So I called him back to see just where.  He said Sea Mist and that she was laying eggs now.  So I called Val  and Joe but Joe was in Destin and Val did not answer.  Then called Bobby and he was on his way, next Beth and then Kate, they all got there quickly.  And sure enough there she was in the hot sun nesting with folks all around but saying away as I asked the man who called, Ray Combs, to please keep people away from her and he did.  Many thanks Ray.  So here is the results, pretty awesome I think…So Mrs. Or Miss Loggerhead nested in the day for nest #30… And Bobby found the eggs so she did nest.  Great experience for Bobby, Kate and Beth…Wayyyyyy Cool.

2009: Nest 28
July 15th, 2009

A Loggerhead with beautiful distinct claw marks. Nest was right in the weed line at the high tide line as well as smack dab in the middle of the Draper Lake outfall. Moved to the East and up to the toe of the dune of The Retreat development. Kelley was approached by Mike and Melanie Hasse who were walking the beach prior to sunrise and had come across the tracks. They were sitting there in lawn chairs protecting the nest so Kelley could complete her walk when Sherry and I came out to document the nest. Nest #287_15_09 DrapperNest #28 Kelley 7915_09

UPDATE!!

Nest #28 was depredated last night by coyotes. With these result attached. you will find pictures (Lorna and Robbin don’t get upset by screen, it was screened incorrectly we know and we are dealing with that).  For all volunteers the screen is to be put on by a permitted volunteer,  It goes the opposite way as in the picture so the longest part of opening goes east to west, the screen is put under the stakes and put down flat and also goes outside the nest a ways, training later.  As you can see this way does not work,   dead hatchling,  eggs left from the coyote dig, scat left by coyote, hatchling tracks trying to get away from coyotes, and more tracks.  If you have any questions please ask. We have had a lot of depredation this year and will see what we can do about it this winter.
3 alive
20 infertile
There were 89 eggs so 66 were deprecated.
