SEA TURTLE NEST ARE BIG NEWS HERE IN WALTON COUNTY, ON THIS NEST WE HAD HELP FROM OUR SHERIFF DEPT. AS WITH NEST ONE IT IS A LOGGERHEAD. IN BACK OF THE SANTA ROSA BEACH CLUB.
UPDATE: Nest #2 has shown signs of hatching for days and we were not sure it had not hatched in the rain this weekend, so last night it was checked and found that all development had stopped. No water had ever gone over the nest but came up into it from the bottom. This is what happens on our beaches. They are so shallow, from top to bottom that water comes up from the bottom. Any way the development stopped and we had 73 dead embryos not fully developed, 32 eggs with no obvious development for a total of 105 eggs. This nest was laid in the middle part of the beach but not high enough on our beaches. It was also a loggerhead.
A slow start for 2011, 5 false crawls and this is nest #1 beachside by the main postoffice walkover in Rosemary Beach, REMEMBER NO FIRES NEAR A SEA TURTLE NEST.
UPDATE:
Nest #1
125 escaped from nest
9 had no obvious
1 dead embryo
93% hatching success
SOUTH WALTON PERMITS BONFIRES ON BEACHES, BUT A PERMIT MUST BE OBTAINED AND NO FIRES CLOSE TO SEA TURTLE NESTS, PLEASE, BE A GOOD TURTLE FRIEND.
